World War II Nurse Donates Mementos of “The Good War”

It was a very special Veterans Day at Episcopal Homes of St. Paul.  Martha Ryan, a resident of the Gardens skilled care, served as a nurse in an evac hospital in Europe during World War II. Her husband James served in the Marines. Martha continued to serve as a nurse anaesthetist in VA hospitals in Vancouver, WA, Richmond, VA and Ann Arbor, VA. She saved most of her and her husbands’ mementos and letters from the war and is now donating them to author and historian Thomas Saylor to help them be archived. Martha was included in Tom’s 2005 book, “The Good War.”

Martha tells Tom how her husband got in a photo with Admiral Nimitz and other top brass after recovering from wounds he suffered in fighting in the Solomon Islands.
