What began more than a decade ago as a partnership between Episcopal Homes and the MacPhail Center for Music has become something much bigger than a choir.
The Sage Singers began around 2012–2013 through MacPhail’s Music for Life program, bringing together residents from Cornelia House, Seabury, Carty Heights and Kings Crossing. Under the direction of MacPhail’s Joey Clark, members began meeting weekly to sing everything from show tunes and hymns to classical music.
From the beginning, the emphasis was on participation, friendship and fun. One longtime member described the weekly music class as a place to socialize, sing and, importantly, “not have to act our age.”
The group soon discovered that its music could bring people together beyond the rehearsal room. In April 2013, the Sage Singers performed at MacPhail’s Music Matters Luncheon at the Minneapolis Convention Center for more than 1,000 supporters. Later that year, they presented their first full concert for friends and members of the Episcopal Homes community.
More than a decade later, that spirit was on full display during the Sage Singers’ recent musical review of Sandy Wilson’s The Boyfriend, directed by MacPhail Teaching Artist Andrea Leap.

What was expected to be a crowded performance quickly became standing-room-only. More than 100 chairs were filled at the Welcome Center/Atrium. The atmosphere was lighthearted and welcoming. There were a variety of solos, French accents, love stories, plenty of laughter—and even beach balls bouncing through the audience.
There were also quieter moments of connection. One audience member shared that although her father, who had lived at Episcopal Homes for many years, had passed away, she returned to support his good friend who sings with the Sage Singers.
According to Creative Ventures Director Kristin Aitchison, about 33 regular singers participated in the group this year. They rehearsed 11 times beginning June 1 before the show on August 17, 2026. The production was deliberately chosen as “a light and fun opportunity,” giving singers a chance to laugh, perform solos and duets, and “not take it too seriously.”
That sense of joy may be the Sage Singers’ greatest achievement.
Today, the Sage Singers remain part of Episcopal Homes’ Creative Ventures programming, supported by contributions to the Episcopal Homes Foundation.
Music may bring them together, but belonging is what keeps them singing.
