ENRICHING LIFE, BUILDING COMMUNITY A tradition of caring since 1894

Saying goodbye to a caring cat companion

July 10, 2019 By Mary Routhieaux

Ollie, an orange cat, lounges on an armchairResidents and staff gathered Wednesday to send their love and blessings to a special feline friend–Ollie. After 10 years of company and cuddles, a retirement party was held for the orange cat of the Church Home.

At the time, pets in a nursing home wasn’t quite popular–people thought of it as counterintuitive to the sterility of a nursing home. However, Episcopal Homes broke the mold and found a home for Ollie to share happiness and healing. Ollie was known for comforting residents as they were passing away, and he will be greatly missed.

Ollie was featured in a 2010 article by the Pioneer Press. You can read more of his story and how he came to arrive at Episcopal Homes by clicking here. We invite you to share your favorite Ollie memory in the comments below, or by tagging us on social media, @Episcopalhomes.
