Leaping off the steep hill, I am thrown into the abyss. Literally. I have just experienced zip-lining for the first time. It is the closest to flying that I have ever known and I am ecstatic!
The oldest in our group is a 71 year-old woman, celebrating her birthday with close family…all over the age of 60. I think it profound, the sense of delighted play they share. It is infectious. And I wonder, why do we sometimes forget our sense of play as we age? Do we adhere to belief systems that do not serve our overall wellbeing? Maybe it’s as simple as not allowing it in our lives because we believe we are “too old.”
This past week, Episcopal homes birthed a new program. Life+ will provide opportunities to enhance the overall wellbeing of our community members, staff and extended neighbors.
It was a leap of faith.
During one of many special moments, a community member stated that her goal was to stop using her walker. She learned some exercises during the week on how to increase her leg strength and was excited to get started. She then challenged herself in front of others by enjoying some physical play on a structure designed for adults, which we had temporarily installed. Through the encouragement of the attentive group, she succeeded in completing the circuit. Soon, many were remembering the joy of play in their physical bodies and hearts. We cheered each other on, and connected in ways unexpected. Inspired, we were all united in that moment of time.
I learned something from our friend this week. She took a risk and a leap of faith.
The next time I zip-line, I will fly with arms outstretched, embracing the Self that Is already me…and my heart will soar.
Sounds like fun!!
